Picture #12

Doug Smith from Ft. Lauderdale, FL, with Paul Tyrone, also from Ft. Lauderdale, getting ready to fly their 4 engined B-17.  The model flew perfectly

Picture #13

Here is a snap of another 4 engined B-17 parked on the grass away from the start line.  Both B-17s were very well crafted.

Picture #14

Here is Bill Benner preparing his P-51 airplane for flight.  Dedicated modelers take care of their models and treat them with painstaking attentiveness to every detail.  The model is protected from harm or careless handling.  Look at the metal and canvas collapsible overhead tent.  Bill's model is upside down resting on a specially made jig, rubberized, to keep the plane firm while being serviced.

Picture #15

His model prepared for flight, Bill Benner is now ready to fly.  He is waiting at the front fly-gate for his turn.  His P-51 is very well constructed and looks real even up close.  A beautiful model.

Picture #16

Meet Doc Smith from St. Pete, FL, and William Sampson.  The large elegant Corsair belongs to William.  They are waiting their turn to fly.

Picture #22

Here is Paul Tyrone of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, with his large Grumman F8F.  Last in the line of single engine fighters to originate from the F4F Wildcat, the F8F entered the pacific to late to serve the Navy in 1945.  The design team did not try to improve on the F6Fs R-2800 Pratt & Whitney, rather to make an airplane smaller and lighter than the F6F.  Resulting performance was exceptional.  Wing span of the F6F was 42' 10", the F8F was 35' 10" (7 feet less).  Power was 2,100 hp with a P&W R-2800 34-W engine.  The US Navy considered it their best piston powered fighter.
