Golden Rule for that Safe Flight

RC Airplane Home

Formula for success: 10 Golden rules explained in details.

First check that all your controls installed properly with hinges that don't bind and have only a minimal hinge gap, than that is ok.

Second, is your servos and pushrods properly installed. If not, check that the screws are secured strong to hardwood rails and tighten them if necessary.

Third, Use the proper size pushrods and control horns for your size of plane. Also the bigger your model, then you need to buy high torque servos as you need more output strength to withstand for your Aileron and Rudder surface. ( 40 size model does not necessarily need a high torque servos, standard servos will just do fine). But, if you need to do good knife edge, then better you buy one for your rudder at least. Adding high torque servos for aileron will make your model fly like a beast.

Fourth, is your batter pack is capable to meet your servos need. Buy a high Amps battery like 1300,1500,1600,1800,2000mAh. The higher the capacity of your battery, you can fly many number of times the same day. Keep in mind, if your airplane has more servos with retracts , flaps, then better buy the best one you can afford. You don't need to buy more than 1000mAh nickel-metal-hydride battery if only planning to use for your trainer only. Remember, the more Amps a battery has, you can use the same battery in your bigger models later...save money in the long run...

Fifth, make sure that your engine is well broken in for test flying which is very important ( Please refer to your engine manual for more details), or you might face your self in a mess, especially when you take-off, were the engine need more power and with not properly broken engine, your engine is bound to quit( Dead-Stick) which is not good for beginner as well as for new first time test flight of any airplane.

Sixth, balance your model properly for CG. ( Refer to your models instruction book) make sure that it is properly balanced for its first flight otherwise .......crash...is certain. If proper C.G. is not achieved, then add some lead weight to either side for the wings so you don't need to make more changes to aileron trim when flying. Also move the battery pack either forward or backward to achieve proper balance for your airplane overall. Remember, a nose heavy condition may not be good, but it is a lot better than being tail heavy.

Seventh, use proper glow fuel for reliable engine operation. Use the right percentage of nitro to oil combination. Ask you hobby stores, they will guide you. Don't go for more than 5% nitro if using for a trainer, more percentage of nitro is used only for more power -to- speed, which I hope you don't need for a basic trainer. Fuel will cost you approx Dhs 45 ( At Hobby Centre, Dubai).

Eighth, Now you are ready at the field to fly your new plane, first range check, which is very important, put your model on the ground, walk from the model to 40-50 feet and check if all the control surfaces are working properly from that distance. You can always ask someone for help at the field to stand near your plane and assist you. Also check with others regarding what frequency they are using, you help yourself by asking, don't think other way round.

Ninth, Before flying, check for wind condition, if you can manage to fly or not. Don't just think of flying if you are not sure. Ask someone for help if you are not sure. Remember, its more difficult to fly any plane in windy conditions.

Tenth, Get an Instructor, We could have told you that first but if we did, you would not be reading all this ten golden rules.

Remember, information is the key for success in this hobby, first to start with than putting your self in a mess.
